Memoria de la exposición Puerto Limón: valorizando la arquitectura caribeña costarricense

Abstract

La arquitectura caribeña costarricense si bien es un tema abordado por distintas disciplinas debido a su vinculación directa con el territorio y la identidad cultural, no ha sido estudiada desde una perspectiva de la conservación y de los principales factores que provocan su deterioro. El biodeterioro de las edificaciones, principalmente las construidas con madera, es un proceso muy común en los climas tropicales, debido a las condiciones de alta humedad y temperatura. Estas condiciones favorecen el crecimiento y desarrollo de diferentes organismos vivos sobre el material, destacando los hongos e insectos por su ubicuidad, fisiología y medios de dispersión. El proyecto busca generar conocimiento científico, tanto en la identificación como en el tratamiento de las lesiones y agentes que afectan a este tipo particular de arquitectura, con el fin de contribuir a su preservación. Para ello, se parte de la necesidad de contar con un equipo multidisciplinario de especialistas que puedan analizar las edificaciones y las lesiones que estas presentan, desde un punto de vista arquitectónico, de la ingeniería y de las ciencias biológicas. Este documento recopila la exposición Puerto Limón: valorizando la arquitectura caribeña costarricense, como una herramienta para sensibilizar y divulgar sobre este patrimonio nacional.

Caribbean architecture in the province of Limón have been studied from different perspectives for its role in the cultural identity and the connection with the land. However, this architecture has not been studied in terms of conservation and the biological factors causing its deterioration. The unique buildings of Caribbean architecture are highly vulnerable due to a number of aspects including their antiquity, inappropriate maintenance, environmental factors, and the fast replacement by other types of buildings that are not related to the traditional architecture of the province. The deterioration of structures especially those that include wood is common in tropical climates due to high humidity and temperature. These conditions favor the growth and reproduction of diverse and multiple organisms in different materials including fungi and insects. Due to all these factors many constructions have been slowly disappearing putting at risk their cultural and economic value. There is a need to revert these processes and preserve these buildings that are part of the urban landscape of the historic city of Limón. This project will generate scientific knowledge in the identification and treatment of the biological agents that affect this type of buildings with the goal to develop strategies for their conservation. A multidisciplinary team of experts will analyze these constructions and their damage from an architectural, engineer and biological perspective. This document compiles the exhibition Puerto Limón: valorizing Costa Rican Caribbean architecture, as a tool to raise awareness and disseminate this national heritage.
