The National Park is located in the Carmen district, in the Central Canton of San José. It is part of the Paseo de las Damas; a set made up of the Jardín de Paz, Morazán, and España parks that, like the National Park, underwent a significant transformation since the late nineteenth century within the framework of liberal governments. The National Monument is the main element of this park, around which its history revolves during the 20th and 21st centuries, and that marks the values and meanings that characterize it. From this monument are identified discourses linked to the construction of national identity.  The immediate environment of the park undergoes important changes during the 20th and 21st centuries, for example, with the construction of institutional buildings and the introduction of elements such as pre-Columbian stone spheres, which reinforce the discourses of power present since the origins of the park. The article reviews the park’s evolution from its origins thus far. Then, it analyzes the discourses present in the different sources consulted to identify values and meanings in the area under study.El Parque Nacional se ubica en el distrito Carmen, en el Cantón Central de San José. Es parte del Paseo de las Damas, que junto con el Jardín de Paz y los Parques Morazán y España, experimentaron una importante transformación desde finales del siglo XIX en el marco de los gobiernos liberales. El Monumento Nacional es el principal elemento de este parque, alrededor del que gira su historia durante los siglos XX y XXI, y que marca los valores y significados que lo caracterizan. A partir de este monumento se identifican discursos ligados a la construcción de la identidad nacional. El entorno inmediato del parque experimenta importantes cambios durante los siglos XX y XXI, por ejemplo, con la construcción de edificios institucionales y con la introducción de elementos como esferas de piedra precolombinas, que refuerzan los discursos de poder presentes desde los orígenes del parque. El texto incluye una reseña de la evolución del parque desde su origen hasta la actualidad. Luego analiza los discursos presentes en las distintas fuentes consultadas para identificar valores y significados identificados en la zona en estudio.
