In the never-ending quest for new and increasingly “smart” materials capable of providing comprehensive and innovative solutions to the various problems within the daily engineering tasks, porous materials, especially metallic foams, have gained a notorious relevance by showing conditions and structural characteristics that make them ideal for several industrial applications. For this reason, the study to fully establish its properties and utilities has opened an important field of research and development in which the Escuela de Ciencia e Ingeniería de los Materiales of the Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica have turned their academic interest. Beneath this effort, measurement and density evaluation of different porous materials (metal foams as main object of observation) employing non-destructive tests (Gamma Scanning) has become the first goal to achieve. In pursuit of this objective, developing a tool for data gathering and automatic control of the process to create structural density profiles of porous samples is an imperative need. Thus, effective implementation of a system able to controlling a tridimensional motion (horizontal, vertical and rotational displacement) of the object below study, while gauging and defining its density in the right spatial spot at a certain point in time is the final settling to be constructed with this project.
