| dc.description.abstract | This work presents the redesign of the Serial Peripheral Interface– Bootloader (SPI-Bootloader) communication module of the Siwa microcontroller, developed at the Integrated Circuits Design Laboratory (DCILab) of the Costa Rica Institute of Technology. The original system relied on an ambiguous mechanism to determine the end of the bootloading process, based on detecting the value 0xFFFFFFFF within the firmware stored in Flash memory. This could lead to premature termination of the loading sequence, compromising the initialization of the microcontroller. To eliminate this risk, a structured firmware header containing validation fields and metadata (MAGIC, VERSION, SIZE, and RESERVED) is introduced. The SPI module was redesigned to decode this header, ensuring a deterministic and unambiguous boot process. Furthermore, the redesign enables the reuse of the Flash memory as secondary storage after the boot sequence finishes, supporting standard JEDEC read, write, and erase commands. The new architecture incorporates byte-alignment mechanisms, word reconstruction, boundary-case handling, and compatibility with different Flash programming schemes. Simulation and synthesis results demonstrate improvements in reliability, traceability, and robustness of the boot process, while preserving compatibility with the overall Siwa architecture and without affecting other microcontroller modules. This redesign strengthens the platform for implantable biomedical applications, where firmware integrity and predictable system behavior are essential. | es |
