Effect of pruning and plant density on yield and quality of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) grown under greenhouse conditions in Costa Rica

dc.descriptionThe effect of two types of pruning (Spanish and Dutch) and three planting densities (2,60; 3,25; and 3,90 plants/m2) on the yield and quality of bell pepper cv. Vikingo, was evaluated. Spanish pruning yields more total fruits per plant (14,71) but of less mean weight (163,96 g) than Dutch pruning (10,65 fruits/plant; 180,30 g/fruit). Spanish pruning yields more total fruits/m2 (46,99) and higher total yield (76,35 ton/ha) and commercial yield (67,35 ton/ha) than Dutch pruning (34,11 fruits/m2; 61,17 ton/ha and 52,37 ton/ha, respectively). Plant density doesn’t affect neither the total mean fruit weight nor the total number of fruits/m2, but both total and commercial yield was higher at 3,90 plants/m2 (75,75 and 65,83 ton/ha, respectively) and the number of fruits per plant was higher at 2,60 plants/m2 (14,63 fruits/plant). dc.descriptionEn esta investigación se evaluó el efecto de dos tipos de poda (española y holandesa) y tres densidades de siembra (2,60; 3,25 y 3,90 plantas/m2) sobre el rendimiento y la calidad del pimiento cuadrado cv. Vikingo. Se obtuvieron más frutos totales por planta (14,71) pero de menor peso promedio (163,96 g) cuando se utilizó poda española que cuando se aplicó poda holandesa (10,65 frutos/planta; 180,30 g/fruto). Con la poda española se obtuvo un mayor número total de frutos/m2 (46,99) y un mayor rendimiento total (76,35 ton/ha) y comercial (67,35 ton/ha) que con la poda holandesa (34,11 frutos/m2; 61,17 ton/ha y 52,37 ton/ha, respectivamente). La densidad de siembra no afectó el peso promedio total de los frutos ni el número total de frutos/m2, pero el rendimiento total y comercial fue mayor a la densidad de 3,90 plantas/m2 (75,75 y 65,83 ton/ha, respectivamente) y el número de frutos por planta fue mayor a la densidad de 2,60 plantas/m2 (14,63 frutos/planta). Los tratamientos que presentaron el mayor rendimiento total y el mayor número de frutos totales/m2 fueron la poda española, tanto a 2,60 plantas/m2 (75,60 ton/ha; 45,01 frutos/m2) como a 3,90 plantas/m2 (84,30 ton/ha; 52,90 frutos/m2).es-ES
