Abstract

Formwork Design is vital to the majority of big scale construction projects and represents a relevant percentage regarding concrete constructions costs, therefore, the automation of this process results in a direct positive impact on both the global project cost and execution time. However, traditional practices in this area do not efficiently solve this matter due to their reliance on heuristic data extraction from 2D plans, computerized models or any other sort of guides that always end with manual work. Building Information Modelling philosophy purports a way to assemble high quantities of information in compact models and offer its availability for the stakeholders. Through the use of a Custom Scripted Algorithm developed in the Visual Programming Platform of Dynamo and Custom Python Scripts, this Case Study shows an effective method of data extraction from a BIM Model and an incipient insight on how the outputs can be interpreted and used for the in site decision-making process regarding the selection of modular formwork panels for different reinforced concrete elements. Finally, the author establishes the need for further research and development in the issue; the reason for which this work and the files herein described can be accessed and modified by any future researchers.
