Inmuebles de arquitectura representativa en tierra y madera del centro histórico de Liberia

Abstract

La arquitectura vernácula, expresión material del paisaje urbano histórico de Liberia, enfrenta un progresivo desinterés social que amenaza su preservación. Conocida como la “ciudad blanca” por sus calles de cascajo y casas encaladas, su patrimonio constructivo en tierra (adobe y bahareque) y madera posee características técnicas y formales únicas que la distinguen de otras regiones.

Este documento es el resultado de la alianza tripartita entre el Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica, la Municipalidad de Liberia y la Asociación para la Cultura de Liberia, formalizado en los proyectos de extensión sobre el Centro Histórico de Liberia y el proyecto de investigación sobre la tierra como material constructivo, desarrollados entre 2020 y 2025. Se presenta la compilación del registro fotográfico y georreferenciado de estos inmuebles dentro del núcleo fundacional, organizado por barrios, ofreciendo una base para su valoración y preservación

Vernacular architecture, the physical expression of Liberia’s historic urban landscape, faces a growing lack of social interest that threatens its preservation. Known as the “white city”for its gravel streets and whitewashed houses, its architectural heritage in earth (adobe and bahareque) and wood has unique technical and formal characteristics that distinguish it from other regions. This document is the result of a tripartite alliance between the Technological Institute of Costa Rica, the Municipality of Liberia, and the Association for the Culture of Liberia, formalized in outreach projects on the Historic Center of Liberia and a research project on earth as a building material, developed between 2020 and 2025. It presents a compilation of the photographic and georeferenced record of these buildings within the founding nucleus, organized by neighborhood, providing a basis for their assessment and preservation.
